TITLE: MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I (4150) ANNUAL SALARY: $21,372.00 - $28,524.00
  MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II (4151) ANNUAL SALARY: $23,796.00 - $32,148.00

LOCATION: Jackson County, Western MO Mental Health Center, Department of Mental Health (These classifications may also be used Statewide by agencies in various locations.)

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I DEFINITION: This is technical work in the preparation of samples for analysis and the performance of routine medical and public health laboratory tests.  An employee in this class receives and prepares samples for analysis and performs standard laboratory tests on a mass-production basis in accordance with specific instructions and clearly prescribed procedures.  Close supervision is provided by a higher-level Medical Laboratory Technician or laboratory professional during the initial stages of training; as the employee gains experience, supervision of routine work becomes more general.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience in a medical or public health laboratory performing routine laboratory tests under the direction of a physician or qualified laboratory technician, and possession of a high school diploma or a GED certificate. (College coursework with specialization in the chemical, physical or biological sciences may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required experience.)

EXAMINATION COMPONENT: Written Examination, 100%. (The knowledge areas included on the written examination are: Name and Number Comparison Exercises, Venipuncture, Hematology, Urinalysis and Serology, Lab Equipment and Glassware, Lab Procedures, Terms, Specimen Care and Quality Control, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology and Microbiology, and Math.


MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II DEFINITION: This is advanced technical work in the performance of routine medical and public health laboratory tests.  An employee in this class performs standard laboratory tests in accordance with clearly prescribed procedures.  Work at this level may be distinguished from that of Medical Laboratory Technician I by responsibility for performance on a mass-production basis of tests involving multiple steps which may include preparation of solutions, reagents and/or media, calibration of equipment, interpretation of results and quality control.  In addition, the employee may prepare specimens for microscopic examination by laboratory professionals.  Work may also include responsibility for assisting in training or providing functional supervision to lower-level laboratory staff.  General supervision is provided by a laboratory professional or other designated superior who reviews work for technical accuracy.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a two-year associate degree for medical laboratory technicians from an accredited college or university.

OR

Three years of experience in a medical or public health laboratory performing a variety of routine laboratory tests under the direction of a physician or qualified laboratory technician.  (Successful completion of a one-year course of training for clinical laboratory assistants approved by CAHEA can substitute for two years of the required experience. College coursework with specialization in the chemical, physical or biological sciences may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required experience.)

EXAMINATION COMPONENT: Written Examination, 100%.
