AIR DEPOT MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST I

DEFINITION

This is technical work in specialized aircraft maintenance for the Office of the Adjutant General, Aviation Classification Repair Activity Depot (AVCRAD).

An employee in this class is responsible for the maintenance of aircraft body and chassis parts. Work involves repairing electrical wiring and fabricating, calibrating and installing a variety of fixed or rotary-wing aircraft elements such as electrical wiring, mechanical components, moveable blades, and metal or composite structural components. Work also involves testing mechanical aircraft components for anomalies; assisting in the selection and procurement of tools, equipment and parts; and accompanying flight crews to perform in-flight adjustments. General supervision is received from a higher-level Air Depot Maintenance Specialist or other designated superior; as employees gain experience and technical proficiency, less supervision is required

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Uses a variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment to repair, replace, and/or rebuild aircraft structures, such as helicopter blades, rotors and fuselage, and mechanical components including rigging, surface controls, and hydraulic units, etc.

Assembles, and installs aircraft rigging and control assemblies and systems (i.e., cables, cylinders, pulleys, brackets, etc.).

Plans, routes and attaches wires between designated locations to form prototype wire harnesses.

Crimps terminal eyelet and lugs to wire ends; insulates wire end connections with plastic sleeves; routes and solders wire to terminal points according to jig board layout.

Connects wiring to accessories, such as relays, circuit breakers, plugs, condensers, switches, and solenoids; installs accessory assemblies in electronic units.

Aligns and assembles parts, materials, and incidental functional items on jigs, fixtures, platen or project plates.

Applies primer and metal bonding film, foam, or other adhesives to bonding surfaces; mixes and applies adhesives.

Reads process charts, work orders, and specifications to determine sequence of bonding operations, amount of bonding agent to be applied, and areas to be bonded.

Dries and cures parts and assemblies, using vacuum fixtures or presses with heated platens.

Calibrates installed or repaired equipment to original manufacturers prescribed specifications.

Conducts functional and continuity tests of electrical assemblies, mechanical components, wire harness, and plugs, using ohmmeter, test lights, and other electrical testing instruments.

Troubleshoots, inspects and tests electrical, structural or mechanical components for anomalies.

Performs miscellaneous duties to service aircraft, including flushing, cleaning, replenishing, greasing and checking lubricants, components and parts assemblies.

Assists in the selection and procurement of tools, equipment and parts.

Reads and interprets manufacturers' and military aircraft maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications in order to effectively complete assignments; maintains files of technical literature, diagrams, parts lists, inventory and other necessary records.

Ensures that an adequate stock of parts used during repair activities is maintained.

Accompanies flight crews to perform in-flight mechanical adjustments and to determine required post-flight repair work.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

Working knowledge of the methods, tools, and practices used in a specialized aircraft maintenance area, such as harness fabrication and installation, mechanical component replacement, metal alloy reworking, sheet metal working, electrical infrastructure, controls, structural integrity etc.

Skill in the use of tools essential to making specialized aircraft repairs.

Ability to work from drawings, schematics, and specifications and to understand and effectively carry out instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

Possession of a high school diploma or a GED certificate.

AND

Three years of technical experience in the specialized maintenance and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural aircraft components and equipment. (Trade or technical school educational with specialization in relevant aircraft maintenance and repair areas may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the stated experience.)
