GRAPHICS SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION

This is professional supervisory graphic arts work producing a large variety and volume of visual informational products for a state agency.

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans, directs, and evaluates graphic arts projects or programs involving the production of publications, web pages, bulletins, brochures, maps, and illustrations in color and black and white.

Consults with administrative and professional personnel on various phases of design projects to determine optimum approach in accomplishing the desired objective.

Develops layouts and designs for a variety of publications; or assigns design work to other graphic artists; proofs and edits all illustrations and artwork prepared by staff.

Functions as liaison with printing vendors and/or staff printers; examines proofs for accuracy.

Supervises the preparation and maintenance of files for archive and maintains file backup system.

Trains, supervises, and evaluates graphic artists, technicians, and support staff.

Develops and/or supervises the development of graphic art work, layouts, and designs utilizing computer-assisted technology.

Supervises the printing of four-color and complex print jobs by observing press runs and examining color accuracy.

Designs and supervises the construction of visual displays and presentations for museums, travel shows, and other public exhibits.

Evaluates and recommends specialized graphic art software and equipment to accomplish an agency's communication needs.

Operates, and supervises the operation of, slide projectors, video cameras, recorders, sync programmers, sound recorders, and electronic dissolve units.

Attends professional seminars, conferences, and meetings; selects members of staff to attend training classes and conferences.

Exercises considerable independence and discretion in the performance of duties; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

Comprehensive knowledge of graphic art methods, and the general principles of layout and design as applied to promotional and informational products.

Comprehensive knowledge of typeface, color harmony, and use of color.

Comprehensive knowledge of computer graphics programs, font styles, file formats, and the operation of various electronic equipment.

Comprehensive knowledge of typography, and typesetting principles and methods.

Comprehensive knowledge of operating digital and video cameras.

Comprehensive knowledge of cartography.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of supervision.

Ability to translate the varied activities of an agency or program into effective, informative, and attractive visual communications.

Ability to create posters, drawings, diagrams, charts, maps, brochures, newsletters, and illustrations using a variety of computerized systems.

Ability to design and prepare exhibits and displays.

Ability to supervise the development of professional graphic artists, technicians, and clerical staff.

Ability to establish job specifications, request estimates, and function as liaison with printing vendors to produce the correct type, format, paper, and finished product as specified.

Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, officials, management, other agency personnel, and the general public.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)

One or more years of experience as a Graphic Arts Specialist III with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or art institute with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Art, Commercial Art, Graphic Art, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, or a closely related field; and,

Three or more years of professional experience involving a variety of graphic art areas.

(24 earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college, university, or art institute in the specified areas may substitute for one year of the required experience.)

(Experience in graphic arts, commercial art, computer graphics, or a closely related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education at a rate of one year for 30 earned credit hours.)
