GRAPHIC ARTS SPECIALIST III

 

DEFINITION

This is advanced professional graphic arts work in the preparation and maintenance of varied visual communications products as part of the informational program of a state agency.

An employee in this class is responsible for the development of graphic and pictorial materials and exhibits for disseminating information concerning agency programs or activities, utilizing computerized systems and/or manual methods. Work also involves planning and formulating an effective art program or design projects and adapting a variety of artistic media to specific problems. Although the technical aspects of the work are performed independently, the ideas to be presented are determined by an administrative or technical superior who also reviews the work upon completion to assure the message is appropriately and accurately represented.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans and formulates effective art services for agency programs.

Confers with administrative and professional personnel on various phases of design projects to determine the message/material that is to be illustrated.

Designs and prepares various types of bulletins, manuals and booklet covers which can be reproduced by means of standard printing processes.

Develops graphic artwork using computer-assisted technology and/or manual methods using a variety of media, equipment and specialized graphics software.

Develops layouts and designs of various types of publications for printing; performs liaison function with printing vendors and/or staff printers; checks proofs.

Designs and constructs, or directs the construction of, various visual presentations including photographic displays, dioramas, lighting, computer generated slide shows, window displays or other exhibits.

Prepares publications for four-color process printing.

Prepares graphics for use in Internet website design.

Modifies graphic artwork received from other agencies to prepare it for printing.

Operates still, digital and video cameras.

Supervises the printing of four-color and complicated print jobs by attending pressruns and checking color accuracy.

Acts as a lead worker in the development and preparation of various publications and web pages.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of cartography.

Ability to translate the varied activities of an agency or program into striking and informative pictorial form.

Ability to employ a variety of electronic and/or artistic media in the creation of posters, diagrams, illustrations, maps, cartoons, and related artwork.

Ability to design and set up exhibits and window displays.

Ability to perform a liaison function with printing vendors in order to produce the correct type, format, paper and finished product as specified.

Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

Two years of experience as a Graphic Arts Specialist II under the Missouri Uniform Classification & Pay System.

OR

Two years of professional experience in graphic arts; and graduation from an accredited four-year college, university or art school with major specialization (at least 24 semester hours) in art, commercial art, graphic art, graphic design and/or computer graphics. (One year of graduate education in one of the listed specialized areas may be substituted for up to one year of the stated experience.)

OR

Six years of experience in graphic arts, commercial art and/or computer graphics, two of which must be at the professional level. (Post-secondary training in art, commercial art, graphic art, graphic design, computer graphics, and/or illustration at an accredited college, vocational technical school or art school may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for a maximum of four years of the stated general experience.)
