GRAPHIC ARTS SPECIALIST I

DEFINITION

This is entry-level graphic arts work of limited scope preparing visual communication products for a state agency.

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Assists in designing posters, drawings, diagrams, charts, maps, brochures, newsletters, and illustrations.

Assists in developing graphic artwork, layouts, and designs utilizing computer-assisted technology and a variety of media, equipment, and specialized graphic hardware and software.

Assists in designing and constructing various visual presentations, including photographic displays and dioramas.

Prepares single color printed documents and publications.

Prepares graphics for use in website design.

Prepares and/or modifies graphic artwork received from other agencies for printing.

Typesets forms in accordance with established standards.

Confers with supervisor on finished product and makes necessary changes.

Operates digital and video cameras.

Prepares and maintains files and records of various projects and artwork for archive.

Exercises independence in the performance of routine duties, with work being reviewed to assure accuracy of message ; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

Introductory knowledge of graphic art methods, and the general principles of layout and design as applied to promotional and informational products.

Introductory knowledge of typeface, color harmony, and use of color.

Introductory knowledge of computer graphics programs, font styles, file formats, and the operation of various electronic equipment.

Introductory knowledge of typography, and typesetting principles and methods.

Introductory knowledge of operating digital and video cameras.

Introductory knowledge of cartography.

Ability to translate varied graphic requests of an agency or program into visual form.

Ability to assist in creating posters, drawings, diagrams, charts, maps, brochures, newsletters, and illustrations using a variety of computerized systems.

Ability to prepare exhibits and displays.

Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and other agency personnel.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)

An Associate degree or 60 or more earned credit hours from an accredited college or university, vocational or technical school, or art institute with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Art, Commercial Art, Graphic Art, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, or a closely related field.

(Experience in graphic arts, commercial art, computer graphics, or a closely related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education at a rate of one year for 30 earned credit hours.)
