PAINTER SUPERVISOR

 

DEFINITION

This is skilled painting and supervisory work in assigning, directing, and evaluating the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers in all phases of painting.

An employee of this class is responsible for laying out work details, assigning and inspecting the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers involved in painting and finishing surfaces of buildings and other structures. Supervision may also be exercised over workers involved in plastering, masonry and concrete work. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written work orders which specify the structures or surfaces to be painted. The employee is expected to proceed without technical supervision and work is subject to performance checks as to progress and results are inspected for satisfactory appearance.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Directs, supervises and participates in skilled and semi-skilled painting and finishing of buildings, surfaces and other structures.

Receives work orders, estimates time and materials needed for completion and assigns work to a crew of skilled and semi-skilled workers using verbal and written instructions.

Reviews work in progress and completed to ensure that work is performed according to instructions.

Instructs skilled and semi-skilled workers in the methods, practices, materials and tools of the painting trade.

Supervises and participates in mixing paints and matching colors.

Maintains inventory of and requisitions paint and painting equipment.

Keeps records of time and materials used and prepares necessary reports.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, materials, methods and equipment of the painting trade.

Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the painting trade.

Thorough knowledge of the qualities and adaptabilities of various surfacing materials; methods of preparing surfaces for finishing and mixing materials to acquire desired colors and qualities; and of the weather and wear resisting qualities of paint and other finishing materials.

Ability to lay out, assign and supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers involved in painting.

Ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials needed to complete a job.

Ability to keep simple records and to prepare reports.

Ability to climb and work from scaffolding or at some distance from the ground.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

Completion of a formal three year apprenticeship in the painting trade supplemented by two years of experience as a skilled painter and completion of the eighth school grade.

OR

Four years of on-the-job training as a painter supplemented by two years experience as a skilled painter and completion of the eighth school grade.

OR

Two years as a Painter with the Missouri Merit System.
