BUILDING CONSTRUCTION WORKER II

DEFINITION

This is mid-level skilled work in major renovation and construction of buildings and other structures.

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Serves as lead worker or may supervise skilled, semi-skilled and/or unskilled workers on a variety of projects.

Assists in establishing project schedules.

Coordinates the ordering and delivery of materials and supplies.

Performs masonry work including the installation of back-up and split face concrete block, stone masonry, tuck pointing, and flashing.

Installs forced main sewer systems.

Constructs and sets forms, fabricates steel reinforcements, and pours concrete for footings, foundations, and flatwork; finishes exposed aggregate concrete.

Installs sub-flooring and flooring; constructs inner and outer walls on buildings; constructs vanities and other cabinets; constructs or replaces roofs.

Installs or renovates complete plumbing, electrical, and heating and cooling systems in buildings.

Paints buildings and other structures using sprayers, brushes, or rollers; applies paneling, wallpaper, fabrics, ceramic tile, and other interior finishes.

Performs finish carpentry such as installation of millwork; constructs boardwalks, stairs, and platforms.

Performs restoration and renovation work on historic buildings and other structures.

Operates a motor vehicle or related heavy equipment as required.

Exercises independence in the performance of responsibilities; receives general administrative direction; assignments may be accompanied by blueprints, penciled layouts, or sketches; work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through inspections.

Performs other related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

Comprehensive knowledge of general construction and repair methods, and the proper utilization and care of tools, materials, and equipment used in building construction.

Comprehensive knowledge of traditional building materials, practices and techniques used in the restoration and reconstruction of historic buildings and other structures.

Ability to function as lead worker or supervisor of staff.

Ability to complete skilled work in carpentry and at least one other building (painting, masonry, roofing, drywall, etc.), electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, or mechanical (refrigeration, welding, etc.) trade.

Ability to interpret and work from sketches, penciled layouts, and blueprints.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to perform manual work requiring heavy lifting, reaching, and bending.

Ability to operate a variety of hand/power tools and various heavy equipment.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (By Assignment)

Ability to obtain the proper motor vehicle operator's license; or training, licenses, or certification as may be required for the operation and maintenance of equipment and proper construction methods.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)

Two or more years of experience as a Park Maintenance Worker III, Building Construction Worker I or Maintenance Worker II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

Two or more years of skilled experience in carpentry and one other building (painting, masonry, roofing, drywall, etc.), electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, or mechanical (refrigeration, welding, etc.) trade; and, completion of the eighth grade.
