BUILDING CONSTRUCTION WORKER IDEFINITIONThis is entry-level semi-skilled and skilled work in major renovation and construction of buildings and other structures. This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification. EXAMPLES OF WORKConstructs and sets forms, fabricates steel reinforcements, and pours concrete for footings, foundations and flatwork; finishes exposed aggregate concrete. Installs or assists in installing sub-flooring and flooring; constructs inner and outer walls on buildings; constructs or replaces roofs. Renovates, installs or assists in installing plumbing, electrical, and heating and cooling systems in buildings; installs sinks, toilet facilities, showers, water heaters, and other fixtures. Paints buildings and other structures using sprayers, brushes, or rollers; applies paneling, wallpaper, fabrics, ceramic tile, and other interior finishes. Performs finish carpentry such as installation of millwork; constructs boardwalks, stairs, and platforms. Exercises independence in the performance of responsibilities; receives general administrative direction; assignments may be accompanied by blueprints, penciled layouts, or sketches; work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through inspections. Operates a motor vehicle or related heavy equipment as required. Performs other related work as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)Comprehensive knowledge of general construction and repair methods, and the proper utilization and care of tools, materials, and equipment used in building construction. Ability to complete semi-skilled and skilled work assignments in at least two of the building (carpentry, painting, masonry, roofing, drywall, etc.), electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, or mechanical (refrigeration, welding, etc.) trades. Ability to interpret and work from sketches, penciled layouts, and blueprints. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to perform manual work requiring heavy lifting, reaching, and bending. Ability to operate a variety of hand/power tools and various heavy equipment. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (By Assignment)Ability to obtain the proper motor vehicle operator's license; or training, licenses or certification as may be required for the operation and maintenance of equipment and proper construction methods. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.) Two or more years of experience as a Park Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System. OR Four or more years of semi-skilled experience in building construction and maintenance, in two of the following; building (carpentry, painting, masonry, roofing, drywall, etc.), electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, or mechanical (refrigeration, welding, etc.) trades; and, completion of the eighth grade. OR Completion of a four-year apprenticeship or on-the-job training in the building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical trades; and, completion of the eighth grade. (Minor Revision 4/26/06) |
