LABORER II

 

DEFINITION

This is manual work involving the application of special manual skills of less than journeyman level, and occasionally including sub-foremanship responsibilities.

Work involves the performance of laboring work of a semi-skilled nature, requiring some training or experience in operational or other manual tasks. Employee may have supervision over a small crew of patients or inmates assigned to laboring work. Routine work is subject to general supervision but specific instructions are given, and frequent inspections are made on any new work.

Any one position may not involve all of the specified duties or knowledges, skills and abilities, nor are the listed examples exhaustive.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises a crew of laborers or inmates and participates in manual labor in connection with the receiving, handling, and storing of coal, building materials, and other similar items used in the operation of a state institution.

Fires manually a low pressure boiler on an assigned shift, in a small central heating plant.

Performs semi-skilled work as a skilled trades helper in assisting in a variety of building and equipment maintenance tasks.

Performs semi-skilled work as an assistant to a power plant mechanic.

Operates power floor sander and removes old finish from chairs and tables by hand methods in preparation for refinishing.

Performs related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Some knowledge of maintenance and general repair activities.

Some skill in the performance of specialized labor work to which assignment is made.

Ability to act as a lead worker and direct the work of helpers or inmates.

Ability to follow oral or written instructions with no more than general supervision.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

One year of experience performing manual and semi-skilled work in building maintenance or construction, equipment maintenance or repair, heating or power plant operation and maintenance, or in related work; and completion of the eighth school grade.
