GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN II

 

DEFINITION

This is journey-level technical work in the capture, storage, manipulation, documentation, distribution and display of geographically referenced information from a variety of sources.

An employee in this class is responsible for storing, manipulating, documenting, distributing and displaying geographically referenced information, and using utility and data conversion software, digitizing tablets, computer screen digitizing, or other methods for capturing data. Work entails data manipulation and analysis which may include quality assurance, creation and maintenance of spatial data topology and attributes, format manipulation, geo-referencing, and datum and projection transformations. Work may also involve providing technical support relating to software and data usage to geographic information system (GIS) users. Other duties include creating metadata detailing data sources and collection, processing and analysis techniques. Work is performed under detailed direction with moderate supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Stores, manipulates, documents, distributes and displays geographically referenced information from a variety of sources.

Manipulates and analyzes data which may include quality assurance, creation and maintenance of spatial data topology and attributes, format manipulation, geo-referencing, and datum and projection transformations.

Compiles, attributes, edits and maintains data in geographic and operational databases and their associated documentation.

Reviews new procedures and software applications prior to full implementation to determine ease of use, functionality and to detect potential problems.

Responds to technical questions from GIS users needing assistance and resolves problems; refers and discusses complex problems with supervisor or other designated contacts as appropriate.

Translates technical concepts and terminology into terms understandable to non-technical GIS users.

Uses queries and GIS applications to generate reports and maps and to ensure data quality.

Ensures that data and data processing procedures adhere to standards, policies and other guidelines.

Participates in meetings, training seminars and user groups as directed.

Performs other related work as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

Two years as a Geographic Information Systems Technician I under the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with at least fifteen (15) semester hours in geographic information systems, geography, cartography, earth science, natural resources, remote sensing, environmental science, computer science, civil engineering, surveying, or closely related areas. (Technical experience in geographic information systems work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the stated education.) (One year of technical experience in geographic information systems work may be substituted for the 15 semester hours when the college graduate lacks the specialized undergraduate coursework.)
