AIR QUALITY MONITORING SPECIALIST IDEFINITIONThis is entry-level professional and technical work assisting with the operation and management of the state's air quality monitoring network or air quality assurance program. This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.EXAMPLES OF WORKAssists in the operation of a computerized data acquisition system to retrieve and transfer air quality data. Assists in the review and evaluation of air quality data for accuracy, completeness, and statistical significance. Assists in the preparation of reports and studies associated with air monitoring or field performance audits. Prepares and maintains appropriate records to substantiate the accuracy of monitoring instruments. Participates in quality control activities of air pollutant monitors. Participates in standardization and certification checks on instruments; assists with the certification of gas standards. Assists in the repair and maintenance of electronic instruments. Assists in the audit of an agency's air quality operation and performance. Assists in the research of new monitoring methods. Assists in preparing sampling media from air monitors for laboratory analysis. Assists in specialized monitoring projects such as air toxics monitoring. Assists with or performs initial diagnostic tests on field and laboratory equipment; performs preventative maintenance on monitoring instrumentation. Participates in providing assistance to other agencies and organizations. Assists in the operation of the air quality assurance laboratory. Assists in the installation of new monitoring sites, including activities such as the construction of platforms and placement of equipment. Receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed for adherence to established policies and procedures. Performs other related work as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)Introductory knowledge of the principles of natural sciences in relation to air monitoring, atmospheric chemistry, and/or electronics. Introductory knowledge of basic electronics and electronic equipment repair. Introductory knowledge of basic air quality auditing techniques and practices. Introductory knowledge of quality assurance theory. Introductory knowledge of mathematical and statistical terms. Introductory knowledge of computer systems and software. Ability to comprehend and apply federal regulations. Ability to comprehend and interpret electronic schematics and computer documentation. Ability to communicate effectively and prepare detailed audits, records, and reports. Ability to install component parts in monitoring or data acquisition devices. Ability to travel as necessary in the performance of assigned work. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Chemistry, Physics, Atmospheric Science or Meteorology, Industrial Hygiene, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Environmental Health Technology, Applied Science and Technology, Mathematics, Biology, or a closely related field. (Experience in environmental testing or monitoring, air emissions auditing, or air emissions control technology may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education.) OR An Associate degree from an accredited college or university or technical school in one or a combination of the following: Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Electronics, Computer Science, Applied Science and Technology, Communications Technology, or a closely related field, including a minimum of 6 earned credit hours in Electronics; and, Two or more years of experience in environmental testing or monitoring, air emissions auditing, or air emissions control technology.
