NURSING ASSISTANT IDEFINITIONThis is entry-level direct care support of geriatric residents in a State of Missouri Veterans Home. This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills or abilities associated with this classification. EXAMPLES OF WORKAssists residents with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, bed making, shaving, dressing and other related tasks. Assists in checking vital signs, height and weight as assigned; collects and maintains records of fluid intake and output; reports on the condition of residents. Follows established infection control practices and emergency protocols. Assists residents in wheel chairs, on stretchers and walking. Promotes and encourages resident hydration and elimination. Assists residents with ambulation, turning and repositioning, and range of motion activities. Cleans bedside units, nursing work rooms and equipment; assists nursing staff with washing and sterilizing equipment. Prepares and maintains written reports and records. Assists with medications ordinarily self-administered when specifically ordered by a physician. Responds to call lights promptly and courteously. Receives formal and on-the-job training in the theory and techniques of direct care support. Receives close supervision; work is reviewed through inspections and observations. Performs related work as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)Introductory knowledge of direct care procedures and techniques involved in providing basic resident care. Ability to prepare and maintain records, charts and reports. Ability to maintain patience and tact in dealing with patients. Ability to take vital signs. Ability to follow directions. Ability to complete a basic course of patient direct care instruction and on-the-job training. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and management. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.) Two or more years of work experience. OR Possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate. OR Possession of a nursing assistant certificate and/or possession of a medication technician certificate issued by the State of Missouri.
