SECURITY GUARDDEFINITIONThis is guard and patrol work securing and protecting public buildings and equipment against loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism, or other causes, and in the control of traffic and crowds. This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification. EXAMPLES OF WORKConducts rounds inside and/or outside of buildings; observes for prowlers, fires, or other danger of loss or damage to property; prepares associated reports. Participates in the direction and control of crowds on public property; responds to questions from the public. Directs and controls traffic at parking lots of public buildings/facilities. Enforces institutional rules of behavior on campus or grounds; reports disturbances or unusual situations which cannot be resolved immediately to a supervisor or the designee as instructed. Ensures that lights are on or off as required and that doors and gates are properly locked. Instructs new employees in the operation of fire protection equipment; ensures that equipment remains in acceptable working condition. Receives close supervision until thoroughly familiar with the duties and responsibilities. Performs other related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)Introductory knowledge of the buildings and grounds patrolled, rules and regulations pertaining to entering and departing facilities, and institutional rules of behavior on campus and/or grounds. Ability to follow a prescribed routine in making rounds to monitor assigned buildings and/or grounds. Ability to walk long distances for long periods of time alone, both indoors and outside under varying work and climatic conditions. Ability to apprehend prowlers and other suspects. Ability to be firm but tactful when required. Ability to meet the public, respond to questions, and furnish information. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.) Two or more years of work experience or self-employment; and, possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate. (Additional work experience may substitute for the required high school education on the basis of one year of experience for two years of high school .) (Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours for one year.)
