LAUNDRY WORKER I

 

DEFINITION

This is routine work in the conduct of laundry activities in a state facility.

Work normally involves the washing or finishing of clothes and linens in an institutional laundry where the employee assists in only one of the laundry functions. Instructions from the Laundry Supervisor or lead worker are specific in nature and work is subject to close inspection during progress or upon completion. In a small laundry, employee may work independently under general supervision.

Any one position may not involve all of the specified duties or knowledges, skills and abilities, nor are the listed examples exhaustive.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Uses mangles, presses or hand irons in finishing laundry.

Operates extractors, dryers, and tumblers.

Marks, counts, and sorts incoming laundry; counts and checks out finished laundry.

Folds, receives, stores, and handles clothing and linen in an institutional linen or supply room.

Strips beds and collects and replaces bed linens.

Cleans work area.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Some knowledge of the use and operation of standard laundry machines and equipment.

Some knowledge of the materials used in a laundry and their correct usage (soaps, bleaches, detergents, starches, softeners, etc.).

Ability to lift or push moderately heavy objects.

Ability to operate one or more laundry machines or tools (hand irons, mangles, and presses).

Ability to perform repetitious tasks.

Ability to work long hours while standing, under conditions of high temperatures and humidity.

Ability to follow simple laundry routines.

Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with residents assisting with the work.

Ability to follow simple work instructions.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

Experience or education sufficient to enable an individual to understand and follow simple work instructions.
