Account Clerk I

DEFINITION

This is routine bookkeeping and related clerical work in the maintenance and review of fiscal records.

An employee in this class performs routine tasks in the maintenance of manual and automated accounting records. Work includes the posting of routine entries to subsidiary ledgers, examining and coding of financial documents, simple balancing operations, and arithmetic computation of financial data in accordance with existing accounting procedures. Duties may also involve receiving funds and verifying amounts. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level account clerk and/or professional accountant.

Any one position may not involve all of the specified duties or knowledges, skills and abilities, nor are the listed examples exhaustive.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Posts source documents to warrant request log, cash receipts journal, vendor ledger, Medicare log, financial journals and the general ledger.

Prepares data processing documents to record encumbrances and payments.

Examines expense accounts, invoices and other documents for mathematical accuracy, completeness, and procedural correctness.

Prepares or assists in preparation of billing to insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

Prepares bank deposits and cash receipts documents.

Types necessary forms in connection with bookkeeping and clerical work such as warrant requests, vouchers, encumbrances and daily revenue transmittals.

Maintains files of source documents consisting of warrant requests, invoices, vouchers, cash receipts, correspondence, and claims to insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, Title XX, etc.

Prepares simple financial statements.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices.

Working knowledge of office methods and procedures.

Ability to make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy.

Ability to perform routine repetitive duties quickly and accurately.

Ability to operate a typewriter, adding machine and calculator.

Ability to work harmoniously with fellow employees

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

One year of office experience; and possession of a high school diploma or a GED certificate, including or supplemented by a course in bookkeeping or accounting.

OR

One year of office experience including considerable work in arithmetic computation; and possession of a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
