Missouri Youth Leadership Forum Selects 26 Youth DelegatesJEFFERSON CITY - The Governor‘s Council on Disability proudly announces the selection of twenty six youth delegates to attend the Missouri Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities (MYLF). The sixth annual forum is held at the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, Missouri on July 27-30, 2008. MYLF is a collaborative partnership with the Missouri Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities and private foundations. The youth delegates are selected to represent a diverse population of the State of Missouri and various disabilities. At MYLF, the delegates will be developing their own personal leadership plan for their future goals and how to have an impact in their community. The MYLF follows a model that was developed in 1992 by California‘s Office of Employment with Disabilities. MYLF is a member of the Associations of Youth Leadership Forum which monitors the successes of the Youth Leadership Forums across the country. The youth delegates learn about leadership skills and styles. Some topics covered in small and large groups are disability culture/pride, career exploration, and assistive technology. The youth delegates participate in a mock legislative session in the Senate Chambers of the Capitol in Jefferson City, meet successful adults with disabilities who serve as mentors. The youth enjoy evenings of sports activities and other recreational pursuits. This year’s keynote speakers are Olegario Cantos, Special Counsel from the U.S. Department of Justice and Thomas Horejes, a member of the National Youth Leadership Network, a youth driven organization to promote leadership.
