OA Honors Commitment to State Recycling Efforts

JEFFERSON CITY - The Office of Administration, Missouri State Recycling Program recognized the outstanding achievements of state employees' recycling efforts by presenting Annual Recycling Awards on Wednesday. Leland Miller an employee of South Central Correctional Center (SCCC), was presented with the Annual Recycling award for an individual. The Missouri State Highway Patrol was honored with the Annual Recycling award for a state agency.

The Recycling Program Awards recognize the initiative of state employees and agencies who follow Gov. Matt Blunt's call to find new uses for resources that would otherwise have been wasted while at the same time producing benefits for the environment and the state.

"I congratulate Leland Miller and the State Highway Patrol for making better use of taxpayer dollars through their recycling efforts," said Rich AuBuchon, deputy commissioner for the Office of Administration. "This is just two examples of the efforts of Missouri's state employees to improve state government."

Mr. Miller has been involved with SCCC's recycling program since the facility opened in 2000. Initially he played a key role in building the program within the confines of the facility and over the past two years has been instrumental in assisting the local solid waste management district by making recycling more accessible to local communities.

The efforts of SCCC resulted in 962 tons of recycled materials in fiscal year 2006 (FY06). If this amount of material had been sent to a landfill, it is estimated that SCCC would have paid at least $34,796 in waste disposal costs.

For the past several years staff at the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) warehouse made recycling simple and convenient for Highway Patrol employees throughout Missouri. The warehouse developed a system where supplies are not only distributed statewide from a central location in Jefferson City, but also many items in the waste stream are returned to the warehouse to be recycled. MSHP Troops located throughout Missouri have the option to recycle office paper, cardboard, rechargeable batteries, inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges, and scrap metal. The MSHP realized that many of their supply trucks were returning to Jefferson City empty and it made sense to offer recycling services to Troops located in areas of the state where recycling services may not be accessible.

In addition, an MSHP warehouse inquiry regarding recycling of rechargeable batteries led to a statewide solution.
